BIGNELL, Frederick William - 82, Spryfield, passed away April 4, 2003, at home, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Jollimore, he was a son of the late James Frederick and Jessie (Bell) Bignell. Fred joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1937 and retired after 20 years of service. He served with North Atlantic Convoys between 1939-1945. After leaving the military in 1957, he completed his career with 35 years as a civilian radar technician at CFB Shearwater. Fred was well-known as an avid swimmer and was often seen in Northwest Arm (Dingle), Williams Lake and Northcliff Pool. Other pastimes included gardening and walking his dog. He is survived by daughters, Rhonda (Vincent) Kennedy, Winnipeg; Lois, Halifax; sons, Kevin (Jennie) Bignell, Middleton; James (Michelle), Chester Basin; brothers, Hugh (Peggy), Glen Margaret; Ray (Bernice), Melville Cove; sister, Dorothy Greig (Gordon), Jollimore; sister-in-law, Joan, Jollimore; grandchildren, John (Kellie) Bignell, Hubley; Christie Kennedy, Halifax; Sean Kennedy, Winnipeg; Laura Bignell, Halifax; Matthew and Blake Bignell, Chester Basin. He was predeceased by his wife, Rita (MacDonald); brothers, Victor in infancy, and Lloyd. Visitation 7-9 p.m. today, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday in Ronald A. Walker Funeral Home, 13549, Highway 333, Tantallon. Funeral service 10 a.m. Monday in Emmanuel Anglican Church, Spryfield, Rev. Mary Wilkie officiating.
