63, of Fox point Passed away
April 4, 2011 in South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater. Born
and raised in the Canning area of Kings County, Nova Scotia, he was
the only son of the late Manley R. and Annie E. (Pearle) Bennett. He
was educated in local schools and was a graduate of the Nova Scotia
Teachers College, Acadia and St. Mary’s University. He began his
teaching career at Chester Municipal High School in 1968 and in 1976
he became the principal at Mill Cove District School in Lunenburg
County- a position he held for 18 years. He became a paraplegic as
the result of a single car accident shortly after assuming the
position at Mill Cove. He adopted two boys: Peter in 1980 and Roy in
1983. His greatest accomplishments while at Mill Cove were the
establishment of a library and the building of a new school for the
Aspotogan Peninsula. He loved teaching and took a keen interest in
the education and welfare of all his students. After early
retirement in 1994, his garden and his roses became his consuming
passion. He touched many all over the world with his web sites
devoted to cryptograms, British Television and Canadian studies. He
served on many committees and boards including: Heritage Advisory,
District Two Fire Commission, Jr. High English Curriculum, Family &
Children’s Services of Lunenburg County and many others. In
addition, he was also a member and the Clerk of the Chester United
Baptist Church. He is survived by his son Peter, Belleville,
Ontario. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his son Roy in
2002. The family will receive visitors 2-4 and 7-9pm Monday April
11th in the Ronald A. Walker Funeral Home, Hubbards. Funeral service
11am April 12th in the Chester United Baptist Church, Chester. Rev.
Dan Green officiating. Burial to follow in Pine Hill Cemetery,
Chester. Donations may be made to the Salvation Army, the
Canadian Cancer Society, VON (Lunenburg County), Children’s Bridge
Foundation, Mercy Ships, an animal shelter, or a charity of your
choice. Thanks is extended to the majority of nurses and doctors who
helped over many, many years at the Victoria General, South Shore
Regional and the N.S. Cancer Centre. Very special thanks to Dr.
George Jollymore, Dr. Kevin Johnson and Palliative care nurse,
Louise Backman/Blackie.
