HUBLEY, Lester E. - 99, Oceanview Manor, formerly of Haliburton Hills, Tantallon, passed away peacefully on June 26, 2007. Born May 31, 1908 in Seabright, Halifax Co., he was the son of the late Anthony and Lorenda "Rennie" (Swinamer) Hubley. He was a member of Seabright Baptist Church and was a 3rd Degree Mason and a member of the Athol Masonic Lodge. Lester was an avid sportsman who enjoyed fly fishing for trout and salmon and loved the game of golf and was a founding member of the Oakfield Golf and Country Club. A former member of The Halifax Gun Club, he was an excellent marksman. As a young man he spent many profitable summers "sticking" sword fish off Cape Breton, always competing for the title of "highliner". During the Second World War his trucking company worked for the Halifax Shipyard helping the war effort. He owned and operated a saw mill and logging operation in Seabright and started the first sand and gravel barging operation in St. Margaret's Bay. He was a member of the Nova Scotia Mining Society and was the principal founder of Nova Scotia Sand and Gravel Limited, Marble Mountain Quarries Limited and Hubley Centre in Tantallon. He also produced a splendid garden and lived a very full and active life. Lester is survived by his daughters, Joan (Bruce) Rawlinson, Toronto, Ont.; Betteann Day, White Rock, B.C.; Janice (Cameron) Sleep, Tantallon; sons, David (Janet), Milford; Robert (Jeanne) and Charles, both of Seabright; 11 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren and former wife, Audrey (Dargie). He was predeceased by his wife, Eleanor (Chisholm); sons, Lorne and Wallace; grandsons, Paul Rawlinson and Shane Hubley; sisters, Irene Hubley, Minnie Fennerty, Elizabeth (Bessie) McGinn, Elsie Young, Harriet (Hattie) Boutilier, Sylvia Bishop, Kathleen Montague; brother, Weldon; former wife, Geraldine (MacDonald), and daughter-in-law, Florena. Visitation will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, July 3, and funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 4, both in Ronald A. Walker Funeral Home, 13549 Peggy's Cove Rd., Tantallon. Burial to follow in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Sackville. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or to a charity of your choice.
