| MASON, William Frederick - "I have enjoyed the total happiness of this world, lived and loved to the fullest, and now I have left my love for you all". William Frederick Mason "Fred", 92, Head of St. Margaret's Bay, passed away peacefully at home, the place he dearly loved. Born in the Bay on August 15, 1911, he was a son of the late Loftus Arthur Mason (1872-1950), a blacksmith, and Emma Peg (Emily) Carmichael (1888-1959), the operator of the first telephone exchange in the Bay area. Fred was known for miles around by thousands of people for his friendly manner and cheery disposition. At the age of 15, he became an entrepreneur, running his own store, with the $27 his Grandmother Carmichael gave him to get started. He later operated the store from his home in 1933 (the present Kennedy Center), married his beautiful wife, Marjorie Winnifred Vincent on October 26, 1935, and then built another store very nearby in 1947, which he operated until 1960. "I have no regrets, it's the nicest career I could have chosen". One of Fred's many joys was telling people about the dance hall he ran in 1928 down behind his store. Here many of Fred's friends met their future wives and husband, dancing was the talk of the community, and the great Hank Snow, the Singing Ranger, often belted out, "I've Been Everywhere", which rather sums up Fred's life. He loved parties of all kinds, attended the many functions in his community, laughed with his numerous friends and family members, beat everyone in bridge until last Wednesday, and especially held his church near and dear to his heart, never missing a Sunday. Fred will be lovingly remembered for his kindness towards all those whose hearts he touched, especially the younger generation. He will be greatly missed by his children, Shirley Ellen (Duncan Dauphinee), Joyce Claire (Charles Bullem), Prince Edward Island, William "Bill" (Linda Downie), Crooked Lake, and Paul Mark (Jessie Langille), St. Margaret's Bay; his brother, Charles Hibbert; sisters, Eileen Ecker, Digby; Lillian Weldon, St. Margaret's Bay; Ruby (Gerry) Lohnes, Caledonia; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his many nieces and nephews, and very dear friends, Barbara and Rick Peart. Fred was predeceased by his mother and father; his loving wife, Marje (1918-1982); brothers, Granville, Arthur, James, Clarence, George; sisters, Mary Coupland and Eleanor Campbell Earl. The family will receive visitors 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today in Ronald A. Walker Funeral Home, 13459 Peggy's Cove Rd., Tantallon. Funeral service 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 28, in St. George's Anglican Church, Head of St. Margaret's Bay, Rev. Mark Marshall officiating. Family flowers only. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of choice. On-line condolences may be made at www.rawalker.ca. Fred was forever thankful for his wonderful family, friends and neighbours for their kindness and support. |
