PUBLICOVER, Ernest Franklyn, (Ret.'d) Squadron Leader R.A.F./R.C.A.F. - 82, Hubbards, passed away Wednesday, August 13, 2003, in South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater. Born in Hubbards, he was a son of the late Wesley and Wilhelmina (Trueman) Publicover. Ernie was a retired RAF and RCAF officer and public servant. He left high school in 1937, and was employed by Maritime Furriers and the Halifax Herald Ltd. until 1939. During this time learned to fly at the Halifax Aero Club. In 1939, he joined the Royal Air Force. He began his pilot training in DeHavilland School of Flying, Hatfield, Advanced Flying and Navigation at RAF Station Hullavington, 1940-1941 Operation Flying with 220 Squadron, RAF, RAF Thornaby, Yorkshire. In 1941-1944, he was an Operation Flying Instructor RAF Debert, and RAF Nassau, Bahamas. In 1945, he was operational pilot and commanding officer 547 Squadron, RAF Leuchars, Scotland, 1946 civilian pilot, New Glasgow, he then rejoined the RCAF in April 1946 and was a Pilot/Navigation Course, Summerside, P.E.I., 1947 Transport Pilot, RCAF Dartmouth, 1947-1948 flight commander, 103 Squadron RCAF Greenwood, 1948-1949 Chief Administrator Officer, RCAF Summerside, 1949-1952 Staff Officer AFHQ, Ottawa, 1952-1957 Staff Officer, Maritime Air Command, Halifax, 1957-1960 Staff Officer, AFHQ, Ottawa, 1960-1962 Commanding Officer, Search and Rescue 418 Squadron Edmonton, 1962-1965 Staff Officer, AFHQ, Ottawa. Resigning his Commission 1965 to participate in the Federal Election, 1965-1968, he was the Chief Project Officer, National Capitol Area Centennial Commission, 1968-1969 Staff Officer, Controller of the Treasurer, 1969-1985 External Affairs, served as Liaison CBC/NFB/Vice Consul, Hamburg, Consul Stockholm, retired a director of Passport Office, Halifax. Moving permanently to Hubbards in 1971. In 1987 he was awarded "Citizen of the Year Award", Hubbards and 1988-89 Awarded Certificated of Appreciation, Nova Scotia Government, 1990 Awarded Certificate of Merit, Canadian Legion; Certificate of Appreciation, Shoreham Village Senior Citizens Association and Plaque for Outstanding Service, Lions Club. Surviving are his second wife, the former Joyce (Harnish, Armstrong); sons, Robert Ernest (Brenda Dunbar), Ottawa; John Osborne (Denise Curley), Hubbards; daughter, Dorothy Jean (Don) Guy, McGrath's Cove; grandchildren, Don (Sasha) Guy, Robin Guy (Stephen Lenser), April Guy, Brian Publicover, Heather Publicover, Angela Publicover, Holly Publicover. He was predeceased by son, John Wesley; first wife, Dorothy Emily Osborne; brothers, Fred, John, Albert; sister, Marjorie. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Ronald A. Walker Funeral Homes. Memorial service 11 a.m. Friday in St. Luke's Anglican Church, Hubbards, Rev. Krista Hilton officiating.
