SCHNARE, Ivan Richard, CD - 89, Blandford, passed away Thursday, November 27, 2003, in Shoreham Village, Chester. Born in East River Point, Lunenburg Co., he was the eldest son of the late Richard Ashley Schnare and Blanche Edna (Keddy) (Schnare) Gates. Ivan attended school in East River and Upper Blandford. He was a member of St. Barnabas Anglican Church, the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 44, Chester, and a charter member of the Blandford Seasiders Senior Citizens' Club. He was a veteran of the Second World War, having served in the 102 Squadron, Marine Divisions R.C.A.F. in Dartmouth and Vancouver carrying out supply, salvage and search and rescue missions in the North Atlantic along with the Pacific Theatre. He retired in Chatham, N.B. with 26 years service, returning to Blandford where he worked constructing many of the local homes bearing his perfectionist mark. He enjoyed gardening, dancing and singing, both as a soloist and with the Choral Group, under the direction of Phyllis Leitch. He was a builder of model ships, including replicas of the "Bluenose 1", "Banking Doreys" and "R.C.A.F. Marine Craft." He is survived by his wife, the former Frances Cleveland; son, Richard, Blandford; grandson, Nathan, Calgary; brother, Ellis, Blandford; half-sister, Muriel Publicover, Blandford. He was predeceased by his stepfather, Osborne Gates; brothers, Basil, Harvey, Percy, and Ernest; stepbrothers, Cecil and Ray Gates; half-brother, Douglas Gates; sisters, Dorothy Redden and Frances McInnis; daughter-in-law, Susan. No visitation by request. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 3, in St. Barnabas Anglican Church, Blandford, Rev. Randy Townsend officiating.
