SHERWOOD, Melvin Richard ó 80, of Allen Heights, St. Margaret's Bay, passed away Sunday, June 28, 2009, at home. He was the youngest and last remaining member of his family. Born to the late Joseph and Kziah Sherwood of Sydney, on February 18, 1929, he was educated in the city of Sydney School System. This was followed by graduation from NSAC, Truro, and MacDonald College, Quebec. He received his B.Sc. in Economics from McGill University, Montreal and Masters Degree from Dalhousie University, Halifax. Melvin was the Atlantic Regional Economist for the Federal department of Fisheries from 1956 - 1962. He was also the Regional Economist for the Atlantic Provinces with Central Mortgage and Housing Corporation. Mel established the position in the Atlantic Region as part of a management team to undertake numerous economic studies to determine the need and demand for investment in various localities throughout the Atlantic Region. He also developed and maintained an intelligence system for the data pertinent to the position. He was also director, Economics for Cape Breton Development Corporation promoting and developing a number of housing projects. Liaison officer in the take over and operation of Point Edward Industrial Park. Regional Director, CMHC, P.E.I., then returned to Nova Scotia for retirement. Mel published works, including "The Housing Component of the Royal Commission into the Economic Prospects of Newfoundland and Labrador" and "Study of the Housing Market in Newfoundland", followed by a study of the housing market in the Atlantic Provinces, thesis for his Masters degree at Dalhousie University. He was commissioner of Oaths for the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia. Mel is survived by his wife of 59 years, the former Geri Chaddock; son, David (Elaine), Halifax; daughter, Ardyth (Allison Drake), Moncton, N.B.; grandsons, Rodney (Karen), Greg (Nicole), Noel; granddaughter, Adenna, Moncton; great-grandsons, Ethan and Liam. The family will receive visitors 2-4 p.m. today, June 30th. Funeral service 2 p.m. Wednesday July 1, both from the Ronald A. Walker Funeral Home, 13549 Peggy's Cove Rd., Tantallon. Rev.
