SCHADE (O'Brien), Dorothy Beatrice - Formerly of Halifax and Hubbards, in her 91st year, passed away peacefully, June 14, 2001, in Harbour View Haven, Lunenburg, where she had been a resident for the past four years. Born in Halifax, September 17, 1909, she was the only daughter of the late James Edward and Annie Theresa (Slattery) O'Brien (Halifax). She received her education in the Halifax school system and graduated from Halifax Business Academy in 1927. She later became a telegrapher with Canadian National Telegraph and worked in that position till 1939, she later worked as a housewife and secretary for her husband who ran and operated Schade's Marine, Diesel and Gas Engine Services Co. Ltd., of which she was director and shareholder until the mid-fifties. She also served as president of the Halifax Senior Citizens for several years and helped organize many tours and 45's card and bridge tournaments at the location on Sackville Street at Wanderers Grounds. As a young women, she was a champion speed skater and won a pair of silver skates as the winner of competitions held at the speed track on the Central Commons in the early mid-twenties. She was also a member of the Royal Purple, (B.P.O. Elks), a founding, charter member and past president of the Marchettes and also of the first Halifax Chapter of The Daughters of the Nile of the Shriners of Philae Temple. She was a lifetime member of St. Andrews United Church, Halifax and United Church Women's Guild. She is survived by her only son, Herman Ernst and his wife Patricia (Horner); grandsons, Herman Mitchell and Blair Lewis, both of whom she adored and were the light of her life until her death; niece, Barbara (Mrs. Owen Blair Cochrane), New Germany; sister-in-law, Elsie (Mrs. Philip Howard) and her son, Helmuth Koerner, wife Janis (Lukeman), all of Halifax. She was predeceased by her husband, Herman Henry Schade in 1976; brothers, John Lewis, Gerald and Frank O'Brien. Cremation has taken place. Family will receive visitors 1:30-3:30 p.m. Saturday, June 16, with memorial service to follow at 3:30 p.m., both in Ronald A. Walker Funeral Home, Tantallon. Family flowers only.
