SHATFORD, Wilson Marshall "Sam" - 81, Fox Point, passed away peacefully, December 22, 2001, at home, after a lengthy illness, following heart surgery. Born in Fox Point, March 6, 1920, he was a son of the late Clyde and Sadie (Westhaver) Shatford. During his lifetime he was employed by Shatford Bros. (General Store), Honeywell Precision Instruments, Toronto, Halifax Freight Handlers Union, the Merchant Marine, drove taxi for himself and he was a pioneer in the lobster pound business and founded Shatford Lobster Co. and St. Margaret's Bay Bait Co. for over 50 years. Sam was well known throughout fishing communities in the Maritimes and was a respected businessman. He had a keen sense of humour and loved to travel, driving over most of North America. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, the former Verna Coolen; son, Winston (Daisy), North River, Lunenburg Co.; granddaughters, Charmaine Harnish, Halifax; Edwina Wells, Fox Point; Wanda (Reginald) Swemsen, St. Joseph, Mich.; grandson, Daniel (Judy), Fox Point; great-grandchildren, Tracy Harnish, Wesley; Gregory, Amanda Cross, Peter and Michael Shatford, all of Halifax; Tanya and Shantelle Cross, both of Fox Point; Alexander and William Swensen, St. Joseph, Mich.; brothers, Bonar and Hazen, both of Halifax; nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sisters, Edna Willeford, Florence Coolen, Mabel in childhood; brother, Murray; great-granddaughter, Sarah Leahanne Cross; great-grandson, Robert Theodore Swensen. Visitation will be held 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Wednesday in Ronald A. Walker Funeral Home, Hubbards. Funeral 2 p.m. Thursday in Fox Point Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Fox Point, Pastor David Crook officiating, assisted by Pastor Roy Uffendell. Burial in the church cemetery, Fox Point.
