SHINYEI, Douglas Hideo - 58, Deep Cove, Lunenburg Co., passed away Saturday, May 19, 2001, in South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater. Born in Winnipeg, he was a son of the late Matsuji Shinyei. He is survived by his mother, Ann (Yamada) Shinyei, Edmonton; wife, Martha, Deep Cove; brother, Franklin, Edmonton. Doug completed undergraduate studies at Simon Fraser University, Burnaby, B.C. and recently, a certificate in Gerontology at Mount Saint Vincent University, a Master of Arts in Education (Adult Education) and a Master of Health Services Administration, both at Dalhousie University. He was recognized by peers, faculty and staff in the Health Services Program with the Dr. Carl Trask Award (1997) and with the Glen Moore Memorial Award (1996). The Gerontology Association of Nova Scotia presented him with the Award of Excellence in 1993. Following graduation, Doug was employed with the Western Regional Health Board. He was an active community volunteer on the Board of District Health Authority No. 1 and with South Shore Health Services Association, Shoreham Village Senior Citizens' Association, Lunenburg/Queens Counties Palliative Care Program, and with Chester Curling Club. Earlier volunteer commitments included service with the Gerontology Association of Nova Scotia, Annapolis Community Health Clinic, Shoreham Village Home for Special Care, Caregiver Action Group-Lunenburg County and Mount Saint Vincent Gerontology Association. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Ronald A. Walker Funeral Homes. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, May 25, in Chester United Baptist Church, Chester, Rev. Dan Green officiating. Family flowers only. Donations in Doug's memory may be made to Chester Curling Club, Fishermen's Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg, South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater or Queens General Hospital, Liverpool.
