| WOOD, Frank Neville - 84, Halifax, formerly of
Tantallon, passed away on November 3, 2005, in Halifax. Born in Dovercourt,
Essex, England, on February 15, 1921, he was the fourth son of the late Walter
and Nellie (Wickers) Wood. Following school and manufacturing industry
experience in Southern Essex, Frank graduated with a B.Sc. (Engineering) from
Imperial College, London University in 1942. In 1940 he joined the Home Guard,
and in 1943 he enlisted as a reservist in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical
Engineers. Frank was married in June 1944, but was immediately separated from
his wife, Elsie, for three years, serving in Italy and Palestine, with the rank
of Major. He returned to civilian life in 1947, and for almost 15 years held
senior positions with Shell International in Brazil and South East Asia, while
his two children attended boarding schools in Britain. Emigration to Canada in
1961 reunited the family. Frank spent the next 10 years in Toronto working on
various projects for engineering firms including Bechtel, INCO and Gibb Albery.
He was also president and founder of Tywood Industries, an innovative reinforced
plastics manufacturing company. He joined the Nova Scotia provincial government
in 1972, and until retirement in 1986, was closely involved with numerous major
Nova Scotian economic/development projects. This was followed by service as the
first Executive Director of the Nova Scotia Consulting Engineers Association (NSCEA)
until full retirement at age 70. Since arrival in Canada, he frequently
participated in a wide variety of activities in the engineering profession as
well as in district, municipal and provincial government affairs. Gardening and
completing the family home in Allen Heights with Elsie were important diversions
in later years. Although originally from Britain, Frank always preferred to
think of himself as a citizen of the country in which he lived, and considered
the acceptance of his family as citizens of Canada to be a major event. He was
predeceased by his parents and brother, Reginald in England, and by his brother,
David in a RAF crash in 1939. He is survived by his wife, Elsie in Halifax; his
son, Andrew and grandchildren Timothy and Nicola in Victoria, B.C.; also by his
brother, Geoffrey in England; and by his daughter, Catherine (Ware) and
granddaughters Gemma and Zoe in England. On-line condolences to:
