MASON, Irene Lillian - 85, St.
Margaret's Bay, passed away Sunday, February 11, 2007, in QEII Health Sciences
Centre, Halifax. Born in Musquodoboit, she was a daughter of the late Mark and
Maude (Dauphinee) Manuel. She grew up living her life at Head of St. Margaret's
Bay with her love of 67 years, Charlie Mason, where they married and raised
their children. Irene worked at the telephone office as a young girl for her
mother-in-law, Emily Mason, and at Fred Mason's Store (even before it was his)
in her younger years, loving the contact with all the people. She would tell
stories of waiting on friends and family and how difficult it was in those days
for people to live. She pumped gas and scooped ice cream along with other
numerous duties. She also worked at the old Prince of Wales Hotel at Head of St.
Margaret's Bay. She would tell us stories of hauntings. Irene was not afraid of
hard work. She loved bingo and gambling machines, as she called them. In her
later years, when she was healthy, Muriel and Lil, Trish, Betty, Anne, Chris or
any number of friends would pick her up and off she would go to bingo or the
Casino or the Canadiana for a meal and a bit of the machines. She would come
home with a smile and tell how she had won, which was almost always. She was
also a member of St. Margaret's Bay White Caps. Bowling was a favorite sport and
she had many trophies to show her high scores. Irene spent the past few years in
and out of the hospital. Her will to live was incredible. She loved to sit in
her window and watch the business of the Bay Country Store before it closed for
good. In the past years a great pleasure for her was her birds that came
everyday to feed and visit her. She would get out her book and name them. Her
favorites were the hummingbirds that came to her window. Surviving are her
husband of 67 years; her children, Margaret Reyno (Fred Holesworth), Halifax;
Charlie (Joanne) Mason, Head of St. Margaret's Bay; Judy (Sonny) Kennedy,
Tantallon; Heather (Brian Power), Head of St. Margaret's Bay; grandchildren, Kim
Publicover, Nancy Slaunwhite, Derek Reyno, Charles III/Chuck Mason, Margaret
Anne (MacDonald), Craig and Brian Kennedy, Emily and Michelle Newell; great-
grandchildren, Marc Marriot, Sarah Publicover, Codey Slaunwhite, Parker,
Adriane, Marcus, Rachel Kennedy, Charles Andrew, Cameron, Alexander and Courtney
Mason, Mason, Gregory and Cathy MacDonald, Hayley and Dylan Reyno. She is also
survived by her only brother and her friend, Melbourne Manuel, and by several
nieces and nephews, as well as great-nieces and nephews. Special thank you to
the staff of 4.2 the New Halifax Infirmary, QEII, for their wonderful care and
compassion during these past few weeks. Also the staff of 9B the VG Site, QEII,
and to Jean Brown for the past three years of caring for Irene. Thank you to Dr.
Valerie Ross, Dr. Japp Bonjer, Dr. Richard Norman, Dr. Jason Williams and their
residents and staff and to the VON and home care workers who arrived daily to
help care for her. Irene was very fortunate to be surrounded by her family who
gave her their attention and love to keep her happy and comfortable in her own
home for as long as possible. Thank you to all friends and family who called and
dropped by to visit her, and to those who held her in their prayers. The family
will receive visitors 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, February 13, and funeral service
will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, both in Ronald A. Walker Funeral Home, 13549
