NICHOLAS, Betty "Joan" - 70, Fox Point, passed away peacefully with her loving daughter, family and friends at her side on June 3, 2007, in QEII Health Sciences Center, Halifax. Born in Sheet Harbour, she was a daughter of the late Eldon and Sadie (MacDonald) Rutledge. Joan will be remembered for her caring ways and generous heart. She always went out of her way to ensure that those she cared about in their trying times had a home cooked meal and fresh baked treats. Her quick wit always brought a smile and chuckle to everyone she talked with. She took great pride in working with her late husband Donald at the local Lions Club and supporting him with his transportation company, KTS Logistics. She was an active member of the Hubbards Ladies Fire Department Auxiliary, and loved working at the garden party suppers. She was also an avid quilt maker. Remembered as Aunt Joan to her many nieces and nephews, she will be forever in our hearts. She is survived by her daughter, Sally Ann, Fox Point; brother, Roy, Sheet Harbour. She was predeceased by her husband, Donald; brothers, Fred, Harold, Dennis; sisters, Lillian, Rhoda, Ruby, and Kathleen. Visitation will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday June 7; funeral service 2 p.m. Friday, June 8, both in Ronald A. Walker Funeral Home, Hubbards, Rev. Laurie Omstead officiating. ROBINSON, William Edward "Hap" - 90, Halifax, and a summer resident of Hubbards, passed away Sunday, June 3, 2007, in Dartmouth General Hospital. Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late Margaret Ann "Madge" Brennan (1888-1949), formerly of St. John's, N.L., and William "Tanky" Robinson (1870-1932), formerly of Halifax, who owned Robinson's Ferry and Boathouse at the end of South Street, next to the Northwest Arm Rowing Club. Bill was a Ham Radio operator (VE1NP) from the age of 16. Bill volunteered in 1939 for active duty during the Second World War, holding the position of leading telegraphist. Bill served on many ships, the longest stints being on the Prince David, the Hepatica and the Louisburg. He was a survivor of the original HMCS Louisburg which was sunk in the Mediterranean. He retired from the Navy in 1945 and shortly thereafter Bill married Teresa Marjorie Johnson of Mill Cove. He joined Maritime Tel & Tel in 1945, retiring as a manager in 1980. He was involved for several years as a member of the executive and union negotiator in the IBEW Local 1030. Bill was a very active civic volunteer. He was an avid golfer and member of Chester Golf Club. Bill was a keen reader, who loved spending time with his family at their cottage in Hubbards. Bill and his wife, Marjorie, had an open door policy at both their homes in Thornhill Park and Mar-Bill Castle in Hubbards. Both residences were always spilling over with laughter, tea, cards and food. Bill was a super father and grandfather. He was the kind of person who maintained friendships from childhood, career, and community throughout his life. He enjoyed meeting new people and learning new things. Bill thought he was very blessed to daily share his life with his grandchildren, Dakota and Cheyenne. A loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and cousin, Bill will be sadly missed but never forgotten for his humour, kindness, strength of will and willingness to help all. Bill is survived by his daughters, Rosanne Marjorie (Dale) Coates, Prospect; Kathy Jane (Tim) Martin, Harrietsfield; cherished and honored grandchildren, Dakota and Cheyenne, Prospect; Landon, Alberta; brother, John "Jack" (Sem) Robinson; sister, Alice McGinn, British Columbia; sisters-in-law, Violet Marie (Johnson) (Jack) Carter, Joanne (Johnson) (Don) Eldershaw; brother-in-law Frank (Ruth) Johnson, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He loved his family and friends dearly. He was predeceased by his wife, Teresa "Marjorie" (Johnson), and brothers, Ron, Hal and Jim. A memorial service to celebrate Bill's life will be held 6:30 p.m. Monday, June 11, in Emmanuel Anglican Church, Spryfield, with a reception to follow in Emmanuel Church Hall. His ashes will be committed to the sea during a naval ceremony at a later date. Family flowers only. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of choice. HUDSON, John Lewis - 69, Timberlea, passed away suddenly on June 10, 2007, in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Country Harbour on August 19, 1937, he was the son of the late Arthur and Mamie Hudson, and although he moved away to pursue his life's work, in his heart Country Harbour was always home. John worked at several different vocations, with his favourite being long distance truck driving, he welcomed the call of the open road and enjoyed the opportunity to see new places and meet new people. He will be remembered for his generous nature and his love of music, his loyalty to his family and his many friends, and his devotion to his dogs. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Connie (Atwell); daughters, Heather (Brian) Travis and grandsons Mitchell and Blake; Shelley Hudson; son, Garth and grandson Colten; sisters, Alice Field (Roy), Charlotte Sangster (Denton); several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sister, Charlotte Louise Hudson. Visitation will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today in Ronald A. Walker Funeral Home, 13549 Peggy's Cove Rd., Tantallon. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 13, in St. Andrews Anglican Church, Timberlea, Rev. Michael Conrad officiating. A second service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, June 14, in Holy Trinity Church, Country Harbour, Rev. Dawn Dickieson officiating. Burial to follow in the church cemetery. MORASH, Julia Maud - 55, Halifax, passed away Friday, June 15, 2007, at home. Born in Windsor, she was the daughter of the late Bernard and Jean Johnston. Julia retired due to illness from the Department of Supply and Services, 1986, where she had been a well-respected payroll clerk. She was a member of St. Andrews Anglican Church, Timberlea. She had long struggled with Multiple Sclerosis since 1979. She is survived by her husband, Earl; daughter, Angela Zinck (Kevin Nicholson), Halifax; stepdaughter, Shawn (Joey) Haddad, Lewis Lake; stepson, Earl (Suzanne Stewart) Webber, Lakeside; sister, Bernardine (Bernie) McHughen, and niece, Crystal McHughen, both of Alberta; aunts, Ruth Millett, Sally McNeil, both of Halifax; stepgranddaughters, Crystal and April Stewart, both of Lakeside. She was predeceased by her aunt, Francis Swaine; nephew, Jamie McHughen. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Monday in St. Andrew's Anglican Church , Timberlea. Interment to follow at a later date. GREENE, Wallace Hugh - 89, Halifax, died June 15, 2007, in Northwood Centre, Halifax. Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late Charles Booth and Annie Agnes (Welsh) Greene. He was a veteran of the Second World War, serving on Corvettes in the Royal Canadian Navy. Surviving are sons, James (Linda), Bedford; Murray (Anne), Amherst; Richard (Sharon), Chester; stepson, Ivan Ross, California; sister, Ethel, Halifax; grandchildren, Chris, Brian, Kelly, Kirsten, Erin and Amy; great-grandchildren, Joshua, Johanna, Ian and Matthew. He was predeceased by his first wife, Edith, and second wife, Marjorie; daughters, Juanita and Annie; brothers, Charles and John. Cremation has taken place and a graveside service will be held on Tuesday, June 19, at 11 a.m. in Bayview Cemetery, Chester, Rev. Leonard Bednar officiating. RUPTASH, Patricia Elaine Griffin - Halifax, formerly of Ottawa, died June 20, 2007, in Halifax. She was born March 17, 1932, in Hudson, Que. She is survived by daughters, Jane Kansas, Susan Ruptash (Peter Friedrichsen), Ellen Ruptash, Laura Ruptash (Henry Dressler), and grandchild, Emma Dressler. She was predeceased by her father, Tommy Cecil Griffin (who sailed with Lawrence of Arabia); her mother, Berenice Dolores Grant Griffin Wood (who was born in Sydney, Cape Breton, and mastered Sumi-e painting); and her sister, Colleen Clark (creative genius and bon vivant). Private burial in Pinehill Cemetery, Hubbards. A gathering in honour of her life will be held 5 p.m. Saturday, June 23, at 1-2678 Fuller Terrace, Halifax. No flowers please.

STEVENS, Esther Genevieve - Went home to be with the Lord on June 24, 2007, in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII, after suffering a stroke. Born on Big Tancook Island, Lunenburg Co., on April 9, 1916, Esther was a daughter of the late Ervine and Jennie (Levy) Stevens, and a granddaughter of Amos H. and Augusta Stevens, and Albert and Melinda Levy. Esther's focus was to serve her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ and to provide a warm and loving home for her husband and children. Esther and Victor, affectionately known as Nan and Pop, were the objects of affection by their adoring grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They leave behind a rich heritage of love and faith. Esther is survived by sons, Victor (Karen), Halifax; Keith (Violet), Boutilier's Point, and Bruce (Jennifer), Liverpool, and daughter, Judith (Daryl Burgess), Lake Fletcher; grandchildren, Victor Stevens III, Darlene Stevens (Gary Lee), Catherine Boutilier (Vincent), Robert Stevens (Monica), Norman Stevens (Sandi), Jennifer Burgess (Ron Murphy), Jacqueline Burgess; stepgranddaughter, Daniella Flumara; great-grandchildren, Miranda Robinson (Bryce) and Tyler Boutilier, Josiah and Krysten Stevens, Haley and Mason Stevens, Clare and Clark Murphy; nieces and nephews; sisters-in-law, Gladys Stevens, Donelda Stevens, Geraldine Stevens, Erna Stevens, and brother-in-law, Lloyd Stevens. Esther was predeceased by brothers, Herman, George and Eric, and sisters, Lottie Zinck, Hazel Peterson and Pearl Haines. She was most fortunate to have a guardian angel in the form of friend and former caregiver, Irene Betts. Esther was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Visitation will be in Ronald A. Walker Funeral Home, 13549 Peggy's Cove Rd., Tantallon, on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held in Full Gospel Church, 6405 North St., Halifax, at 2 p.m. on Thursday, June 28, Rev. Gary Barrett officiating, assisted by Rev. W.J. Wozney, with a reception following in the church reception facility. Interment will follow in Black Point Cemetery. HUBLEY, Lester E. - 99, Oceanview Manor, formerly of Haliburton Hills, Tantallon, passed away peacefully on June 26, 2007. Born May 31, 1908 in Seabright, Halifax Co., he was the son of the late Anthony and Lorenda "Rennie" (Swinamer) Hubley. He was a member of Seabright Baptist Church and was a 3rd Degree Mason and a member of the Athol Masonic Lodge. Lester was an avid sportsman who enjoyed fly fishing for trout and salmon and loved the game of golf and was a founding member of the Oakfield Golf and Country Club. A former member of The Halifax Gun Club, he was an excellent marksman. As a young man he spent many profitable summers "sticking" sword fish off Cape Breton, always competing for the title of "highliner". During the Second World War his trucking company worked for the Halifax Shipyard helping the war effort. He owned and operated a saw mill and logging operation in Seabright and started the first sand and gravel barging operation in St. Margaret's Bay. He was a member of the Nova Scotia Mining Society and was the principal founder of Nova Scotia Sand and Gravel Limited, Marble Mountain Quarries Limited and Hubley Centre in Tantallon. He also produced a splendid garden and lived a very full and active life. Lester is survived by his daughters, Joan (Bruce) Rawlinson, Toronto, Ont.; Betteann Day, White Rock, B.C.; Janice (Cameron) Sleep, Tantallon; sons, David (Janet), Milford; Robert (Jeanne) and Charles, both of Seabright; 11 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren and former wife, Audrey (Dargie). He was predeceased by his wife, Eleanor (Chisholm); sons, Lorne and Wallace; grandsons, Paul Rawlinson and Shane Hubley; sisters, Irene Hubley, Minnie Fennerty, Elizabeth (Bessie) McGinn, Elsie Young, Harriet (Hattie) Boutilier, Sylvia Bishop, Kathleen Montague; brother, Weldon; former wife, Geraldine (MacDonald), and daughter-in-law, Florena. Visitation will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, July 3, and funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 4, both in Ronald A. Walker Funeral Home, 13549 Peggy's Cove Rd., Tantallon. Burial to follow in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Sackville. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or to a charity of your choice.
