PACE, J. Shirley - Passed away Monday, November 20, 2006, following a brief illness. The widow of the late Hon. Leonard L. Pace, Shirley was a resident of Seabright for over 25 years. She is survived by her three children, Beverly (Roger), Robert (Louise), and David (Patricia). Originally from Glace Bay, she was the eldest daughter of the late Reta and Lloyd MacFadgen's nine children. She is survived by her brother, Robert (Mabel), and sisters, Josephine (Glasier), Beverly (Trevor), Myrtle (Wayne), and brother-in-law, Dr. Graham Pace. A hard worker, she excelled throughout high school receiving many top prizes and went on to study at Truro's Normal Teacher's College. She later returned to Glace Bay to teach grade nine. Shirley's focus was always on her family. With the little money she had earned from teaching school, Shirley and her brothers created a family business for their father, aptly named McFadgen's Bakery. A strong advocate of education, she went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree from Acadia University where she and Leonard met. The two later married and moved to Halifax where Leonard was attending law school. It would be here where Shirley would raise her three children. However, she wasn't a typical "mother of three" as throughout Leonard's political and public life, she worked tirelessly on his campaigns as both a key strategist and his closest confidante. When it came to business, Shirley always had a vision for success. She managed the finances at McFadgen's and was instrumental in helping her sons create their company, Evergreen Landscaping Ltd. Her entrepreneurial spirit did not lay solely with her immediate family. Shirley proved herself the consummate entrepreneur in opening The Christmas Shoppe and operating Canadian Christmas Wreaths with her daughters-in-law, Louise and Patricia. Shirley will be forever missed by all nine of her grandchildren. To them, she was more than a grandmother. She would not hesitate to jump in the ocean with them on a late August afternoon at "the Boathouse" or to challenge them to improve a less than perfect test score. As a grandmother, Shirley will be remembered for the love and encouragement she gave to all her grandchildren, while teaching them to be the best that they could be. Shirley was not only a loving and caring mother and grandmother to her immediate family, she also gave her knowledge and time freely to anyone, whether they sought advice in matters of business, or simply required the comfort of a friend. Until her very last day, Shirley was a true source of energy and inspiration to all her family and friends. Visitation will take place in William Black Memorial Church in Glen Margaret today from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, November 23, in William Black Memorial Church. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the William Black Memorial Cemetery Fund in Glen Margaret. Memorial donations can be mailed to 110 Bayview Dr., Hackett's Cove, NS B3Z 3J9.
