PORTER, Glenn "Jack", MWO Ret'd - 71, Black Point, died November 9, 2007, after a short illness. Born in Wolfville, he was the middle son of the late Glenn Parker Porter and Nedra (Rhodenizer) Porter Marshall. Jack joined the Army young. During his military career he did two tours in Germany as well as two in the Middle East as a UN Peacekeeper. After retiring from the military, he joined Canada Post and was the postmaster in Caledonia and Tantallon. In Caledonia, he was a Lieutenant in the volunteer fire department. He was always an involved member of his local Royal Canadian Legion. Jack is survived by his son, Roland (Krista) Porter, Rawdon Gold Mines; daughter, Rosemary (Terri Henson) Porter, Dartmouth; grandsons, Ben and John "Jack" Porter, RGM; brothers, Wayne (Betty) Porter, Dayspring; James Porter, Conquerall Mills; one niece and five nephews; stepdaughters, Heather (Louis) Dickinson, Musquodoboit; Pamela (Alex) Ferro, Hammonds Plains; seven stepgrandchildren, and his special buddy, Duke. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his second wife, Maddie, and one nephew. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 13, in Ronald A. Walker Funeral Home, 13549 Peggy's Cove Rd., Tantallon. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or your local Legion branch would be appreciated.
MARTIN, Hal Stanley - 48, Upper Tantallon, passed away suddenly Wednesday, November 7, 2007, in Fort McMurray, Alta. Born in Halifax, he was a son of Stanley Martin, Tantallon, and the late Nevilia (Boutilier) Martin. Hal worked many years as a bus driver for the Halifax School Board and later worked for Acadian Lines, and most recently with Cardinal Coach Line in Fort McMurray. He is survived by his wife, Beverley A. (Stevens); sons, Ryan, Tantallon; David (Katie Morrison), Calgary; daughter, Nicole, Halifax; brothers, Jeffrey (Irene), Calgary; Craig, Tantallon; Collin, Tantallon; sisters, Denise, Dartmouth; Twila (Denis Tufts), Meteghan; grandson, Nolan David, Calgary. Besides his mother, he was predeceased by a brother in infancy. The family will receive visitors 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday, funeral service 1 p.m. Saturday, both in Ronald A. ROBINSON, Ethel Patricia "Patsy" - 68, Hubbards, passed away peacefully with grace and dignity on Tuesday, November 20, 2007. Born in Halifax, she was the daughter of the late Gerald and Ethel (MacLean) Goodwin. Patsy was a great mother and the best "Nanny" in the whole world. She is survived by her partner, Greg Reid; daughter, Gail (James) Dominey, Fox Point; grandchildren, Tova and Maxwell Cranford, and Matthew Reid; brother, James (Buzzy) (Carolyn) Goodwin, Timberlea. She was predeceased by her husband, Jackie; son, Michael John, and daughter, Cindy Lee. The family will receive visitors 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today and funeral service 3 p.m. Friday, both in Ronald A. Walker Funeral Home, Hubbards, Rev. Dan Greene officiating. Burial to take place at a later date. HOLTAN, Stella Marie - 72, Bayswater, passed away Wednesday, November 21, 2007, at home. Born in Blandford, she was a daughter of the late Warren Fenwick and Oda Violet (Gates) Cleveland. Stella was past president of the IOOF MU Blandford. She also took an active role in the Seasider's Seniors Club and was an active bingo and card player. She is survived by sons, Donald and Fred (Teri-Leigh), both of Bayswater; daughter, Edna, St. Stephens; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brothers, Bruce Lionel, Wilfred Roy, Granville Harvey; sisters, Isabell Marjorie, Clara Francis, Pauline Edna. She was predeceased by her husband, Haakon "Bill"; sons, Olaf and Sigurd; daughter-in-law, Sandra; brothers, Lincoln Fenwick, John Franklin, Richard Warren; sister, Marion Josephine. Visitation will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday in Ronald A. Walker Funeral Home, Hubbards. Funeral service 11 a.m. Saturday in All Saints Anglican Church, Bayswater, Rev. Mark Marshall officiating. AASVANGEN, Solveig - 85, Chester, formerly of Hubbards, passed away Tuesday, November 27, 2007, in Shoreham Village, Chester. Born in Norway, she was the daughter of the late Johan and Helga (Odegaard) Fosshein. Solveig was a former member of Ladies Auxiliary of the Hubbards District Fire Department. She is survived by her grandsons, Bill (Vicki), and Erik, both of Halifax; great-grandson, Spencer; daughter-in-law, Agnes. She was predeceased by her husband, Ivar, and son, Roar. A family committal service will be held in Pine Hill Cemetery, Hubbards. ALDERS, Evelyn Jewers - Halifax, formerly of Head of St. Margaret's Bay, passed away Tuesday, November 27, 2007, in QEII Health Sciences Centre, Halifax. Born in Halifax, she was a daughter of the late Samuel and Edith (Finck) Jewers. Evelyn was a founding member of Mystic Star Chapter No. 40, O.E.S., St. Margaret's Bay; also a charter member of the Athina Chapter Daughters of the Nile No. 149, Halifax, and a member of St. George's Anglican Church, Head of St. Margaret's Bay. She is survived by her daughter Joanne (Richard) Fry, Bayside; grandsons, Creg (Laura) and Scott (Moira), both of Dartmouth; great-grandson, Richard; great-granddaughters, Meagan and Katie. She also leaves behind her loving pet, "Molly"; her dear friends, Helen Schofield and Christine Ryan, and a number of cousins. She was predeceased by her husband of 57 years, Richmond "Dick", in 1999. The family will receive visitors 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today in the Ronald A.
