SLAUNWHITE, Donald James
SLAUNWHITE, Donald James - Today, October 13, 2003, with hearts breaking with sadness, we announce the death of our loving father. Dad was born September 28, 1928, and we celebrated his 75th birthday in the calm before Hurricane Juan just weeks ago. One of 14 children, Dad's family was poor in money only; they all knew how to laugh, have a good time, and respect the teaching of their Catholic faith. Dad developed polio at a very young age, and was left with a limp...we children didn't seem to notice, and neither did our Mom, Maxine Westhaver, who married Dad September 14, 1957. Together they defined family life, and managed to raise five spirited children. It took every bit of strength Dad had to put on a sports jacket to attend his wife's, our mother's funeral in 1986...she was 46 and had known only a few of the 11 grandchildren at the time of her death. Dad also lost several of his family members over the years; brother, Gerald; sister, Mildred, and brothers, Frankie and Kenneth as children. An employee of the photo section of the Dockyard for over 40 years, Dad was a pretty well-liked fellow...he was a quiet man, respectful of others, never needing to be center of attention. Somehow, he did find a special place in the hearts of those who met and knew him. We are grateful for Dad's life, relieved his struggle with cancer these past four years is over, but still find his loss now deep and achingly sad. Mourning our father are Cathy Slaunwhite and Chris Robart, Michael and Sarah, Ottawa; Danny Slaunwhite and Alicia, Connor and Shamus, Tantallon; Karen Foster and Steven, Deanna and Andrew, Tantallon; Don Slaunwhite and Jill, Adam, Benjamin and Eric, Dartmouth, and Jim Slaunwhite and Susan, Sam and Molly, Head of St. Margaret's Bay. Dad's brothers and sisters and their families helped take Dad to Chemo visits, brought lobster and homemade pickles, played cards, brought communion and took Dad to the Casino; Marion and Bruce, Mary, Helen, Kathleen, Billy, Johnny and Dot, David, Richard and Karen and Theresa, we know you feel this loss just as deeply as we do. Mom's family was very good to Dad, and he replied with quiet acts of thoughtfulness in return; Lynn and Lloyd, Prem and Charles, and the deceased brothers-in-law, Reid, Skipper and Brian, and their families have held a special place in our family history. Doctors, caregivers, bank tellers, Casino restaurant and table workers, grocery store personnel, pharmacists, palliative care and VON nurses and care attendants, Chemo nurses, former co-workers and friends; every kindness you have shown warmed our hearts then, and eases our sadness now. Dad's funeral will be just like Mom's, in Ronald A. Walker Funeral Home, it will bring a personal touch these next few days. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. today, 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, October 15, in Ronald A. Walker Funeral Home, 13549 Highway No. 333, Peggy's Cove Road, Tantallon. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 a.m. Thursday, October 16, in Sacred Heart Parish, 1714 St. Margaret's Bay Rd., Lakeside, Father James Richards officiating. Committal will follow in St. James Anglican Church Cemetery, Fox Point. Words of condolences, remembrances through flowers or gifts to charity, though no expected, may be arranged through website:

MASON, William Frederick
MASON, William Frederick - "I have enjoyed the total happiness of this world, lived and loved to the fullest, and now I have left my love for you all". William Frederick Mason "Fred", 92, Head of St. Margaret's Bay, passed away peacefully at home, the place he dearly loved. Born in the Bay on August 15, 1911, he was a son of the late Loftus Arthur Mason (1872-1950), a blacksmith, and Emma Peg (Emily) Carmichael (1888-1959), the operator of the first telephone exchange in the Bay area. Fred was known for miles around by thousands of people for his friendly manner and cheery disposition. At the age of 15, he became an entrepreneur, running his own store, with the $27 his Grandmother Carmichael gave him to get started. He later operated the store from his home in 1933 (the present Kennedy Center), married his beautiful wife, Marjorie Winnifred Vincent on October 26, 1935, and then built another store very nearby in 1947, which he operated until 1960. "I have no regrets, it's the nicest career I could have chosen". One of Fred's many joys was telling people about the dance hall he ran in 1928 down behind his store. Here many of Fred's friends met their future wives and husband, dancing was the talk of the community, and the great Hank Snow, the Singing Ranger, often belted out, "I've Been Everywhere", which rather sums up Fred's life. He loved parties of all kinds, attended the many functions in his community, laughed with his numerous friends and family members, beat everyone in bridge until last Wednesday, and especially held his church near and dear to his heart, never missing a Sunday. Fred will be lovingly remembered for his kindness towards all those whose hearts he touched, especially the younger generation. He will be greatly missed by his children, Shirley Ellen (Duncan Dauphinee), Joyce Claire (Charles Bullem), Prince Edward Island, William "Bill" (Linda Downie), Crooked Lake, and Paul Mark (Jessie Langille), St. Margaret's Bay; his brother, Charles Hibbert; sisters, Eileen Ecker, Digby; Lillian Weldon, St. Margaret's Bay; Ruby (Gerry) Lohnes, Caledonia; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his many nieces and nephews, and very dear friends, Barbara and Rick Peart. Fred was predeceased by his mother and father; his loving wife, Marje (1918-1982); brothers, Granville, Arthur, James, Clarence, George; sisters, Mary Coupland and Eleanor Campbell Earl. The family will receive visitors 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today in Ronald A. Walker Funeral Home, 13459 Peggy's Cove Rd., Tantallon. Funeral service 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 28, in St. George's Anglican Church, Head of St. Margaret's Bay, Rev. Mark Marshall officiating. Family flowers only. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of choice. On-line condolences may be made at www.rawalker.ca. Fred was forever thankful for his wonderful family, friends and neighbours for their kindness and support.
